Google Doodle honors, Maria Mitchell, 19th century astronomer, comet chaser. 
 
Google has transformed its logo into a Google Doodle honoring Maria Mitchell, the 19th century astronomer who discovered a comet which came to be named Miss Mitchell’s comet. Mitchell was born this day in 1818 and discovered the comet C/1847 T1 on October 1st, 1847 before reaching her thirtieth birthday. She was a pioneer in the field of comet study and a pioneer among women in science. Despite being an American, King Frederick VI of Denmark gave Mitchell a gold medal for her discovery.
